Count Basie –– Basie Jam, by Alon Sagee
Count Basie –– Basie Jam
This is one of my favorite jazz albums of all time. The first track on side one of this really well-recorded LP is what converted me… before this, I never liked, nor understood big band music. It took time, but once my audio system got better and better at resolving so many instruments playing at once without smearing them, I was hooked. I got it. Now I can’t help smiling when I hear a master like Count Basie at work, orchestrating all the musicians to play off each other while remaining cohesive. This is difficult and he does it brilliantly.
Listening with my newly configured “near-field” set up, including my new Spendor S3/5 speakers (thanks Kevin!) is thrilling, throwing a full and deep soundstage with lots of ambient queues and solid instrument placement. This album is simply wonderful. I’ve got the original LP. It’s worth the search if you can find a good copy.
