Lana Del Rey, “Norman Fucking Rockwell”, by David Hicks

Lana Del Rey has made a career out of writing lyrics that subtly, or not (“my pussy tastes like Pepsi-Cola”), appeal to the desires of pubescent youth or simply come off as quirky/humorous to adults.  Her sixth album, NFR is no exception.  All of these new songs are delivered with the same laid back, yet energized, enticing, and sultry delivery that we associate with the LDR persona, but there’s an added magnetism in her vocal delivery on this album that made me pay attention to her singing when I played the LP.  I do find the tunes enjoyable as background music, but much more entertaining when I’m listening to her sing the lyrics.  For me, this is LDR’s best album yet.  It’s as if Elizabeth Grant has finally perfected her singing and songwriting in a way that, after years of imitating Lana Del Rey, she has finally made her own.
YMMV, but you can check it out on Qobuz or YouTube below.

Bonus points if you identified Duke Nicholson, Jack Nicholson’s grandson, on the cover of the album. He’s the one on the right.
