Nilufer Yanya, “Miss Universe”, by Stefan Zorn
This is the first album by a rising young talent from London. Nilufer has been making waves since she first started uploading her own twist on independent rock music to Soundcloud in 2014. She got early recognition for “Baby Luv”, which showcased her distinctive voice and was written by herself, like all of her songs. She has recently released “Miss Universe”, her first full-length album. The songwriting is amazing and deals with all kinds of issues regarding growing up and exploring what it means to be(come) an adult. But make no mistake, her songwriting is very mature and simply gorgeous. The music is somewhat subdued, especially compared to her earlier songs. However, there is often a fascinating build-up in her songs and all songs feature Nilufer’s distinctive guitar playing. Songs such as “In Your Head” and “Monsters under the Bed” really showcase her knack for memorable melodies combined with very interesting songwriting and her amazing voice.
Interestingly, the album is also a concept album of sorts with “skits” where Nilufer advertises the (made up) health company WWAY health. They sometimes fall a bit flat, but this attempt shows the Nilufer has her own mind and is not afraid to take risks. She is also a great live performer, where, despite being a bit shy in between songs, she brings a lot of energy to her music. With her first full-length album, Nilufer Yanya shows that the initial buzz about her is warranted and we can expect much more from her in the future.”
