Tierra Whack- Whack World, by David Hicks
David’s April 1st Music Pick-
Tierra Whack, Whack World
While looking for a new version of Pink Floyd’s song Echoes as performed by Rodrigo Y Gabriela, a song that clocks in at just over 18 minutes, I managed to stumble across the album “Whack World”, by Tierra Whack. Tierra’s entire album clocks in at 15 minutes in length and contains 15 rap songs, each a minute in length. I have fewer rap albums in my collection than any other genre, but I couldn’t resist checking this album out. And by checking it out, I mean I listened to all 15 tracks, and at no time did I feel like I was struggling to get through the songs. In fact, I couldn’t imagine anyone listening to just one song. Each of the compositions does stand on its own, but each one invites you into a small piece of Tierra’s 23-year-old life in a satisfying enough way that not wanting more feels a bit like you’d be stopping after eating just one potato chip. There is a YouTube video of the entire album, but watching part of the video after listening to the album didn’t provide me with the same level of interest that listening to the music a la carte did. YMMV, but my advice is that you give the tunes a listen to first so that you’re not distracted by the visuals of the music video. I’d even go so far as to suggest that if you only have the ability to listen to this on YouTube, you do so without watching the video while you’re listening to the songs, at least for the first time through. My apologies to the videographers, but I found their creative visuals distracted me from the personal impact the lyrics of the song possessed.
