Tomasz Stanko Quartet, “Soul of Things”, by Grant Stoner

My album pic for this month is Tomasz Stanko Quartet “ Soul Of Things” ECM 2002 cd
I have a number of Tomasz albums and this is the most laid back. It features Tomasz on trumpet, Marcin Waslewski on piano, Slawomir Kurkiewicz bass and Michal Miskiewicz on drums. The songs, or sonic sculptures if you will, are simply labeled 1-13. Not as abstract as some of his offerings, and despite kicking it up a notch at times, all tunes are very melodious and incredibly beautiful.
The sound is typical ECM…superb. Drums are spread in stereo with different cymbals in various positions in the soundstage. The bass is full and well defined. The piano is crystal clear with nice air around every note. Tomasz trumpet is breathy, melodic and so defined you can tell when it’s time to clear the spit valve.
I’d recommend pairing with some earthy red wine or some rich cognac, dim the lights and enjoy!
