V.S.O.P., “The Quintet”, by Larry Deniston
My album pick for the October, 2019 Muse is The Quintet by V.S.O.P. , 2 record set, R2-34976 on Columbia Records, 1977. V.S.O.P. is made up of Herbie Hancock (keyboards and piano), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums); all except Hubbard had played in the Miles Davis quintet in the ’60’s. V.S.O.P. was primarily a live band and the album The Quintet was recorded live at The Greek Theater in Berkeley and The San Diego Civic Theater in July, 1977. In this album, Hancock and his band mates invoke some of the ’60’s straight ahead jazz that simply speaks to me. The record sounds very good and is well produced, but the performances are exceptional.
