Alón’s Video Vault

Nov 26, 2014

This Science and Music theme seems to be showing up a lot lately – this time, using actual music. This musical Science Experiment is for real, no special effects are used (it's not perfect, just fascinating) If you like electronic music, crank it up, if not, it's still worth watching at low volume, especially considering what this crazy guy does with a Tesla Coil! In Memorium: Harry Pearson

Nov 11, 2014

Arguably one of the founding fathers of high-end audio Harry Pearson passed away a few days ago. If you've been an audiophile for a few decades, there is little chance you missed the effect this man had on shaping our industry into what it is today. He wasn't always the easiest guy to get along with, but a pioneer he was, and we have him to thank for so many years of service to audiophiles everywhere. Two tributes to his life and times are worth reading: A short memoir from our friend Albert Von Schweikert, and an extensive piece by the…

Organizing A Computer-Based Audio Library

Hello All, I almost called this new program of expert guest bloggers, The SFAS Guestperts Series – so obviously, I need some better sounding name suggestions! Please submit your ideas in a comment below. For this installment, I am pleased to introduce you to Dan Gravell, from England – our first guest expert. Dan offers us a good primer on maximizing enjoyment from our computer based music systems. He has some good insights that could help even some of you more seasoned computer audiophiles. Enjoy!   Alón ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Alón, for inviting me to write for the San Francisco Audiophile Society! Alón’s Video Vault: Water and Sound

Oct 21, 2014

Some things in life are just fascinating. This is a relatively simple experiment showing the behavior of regular tap water when introduced to a certain audio frequency. This makes me want to learn what's actually happening here, and I'm sure many readers would enjoy some insight. So, if you can explain this phenomenon to the membership, please enlighten us by posting a comment below.

Berkeley Hi-Fi School Opens in East Bay!

Oct 07, 2014

In what will be a dream come true for many Bay Area audiophiles, I am happy to report that industry veteran Roger Modjeski has opened a dedicated Hi-Fi School in Berkeley! Yes, this is very exciting... I don't believe I've heard of any other school with a physical location that is completely focused on educating audiophiles. Topics include everything from the basics of electronics, to building your own amplifiers. We're very fortunate to have this resource in our midst. The first class on the basics of electronics starts Wednesday October 15 at 7:30PM. Space is limited. Here's the link to the website:

The Future of Music Videos?

Sep 10, 2014

You must experience this... recording artist Beck has proven that he is, in fact, the center of the musical Universe. However, this time, he surrounds his omnipotent self with almost 180 superb musicians and singers and presents a cover version of a popular David Bowie favorite. Really. Breathtaking and epic in its sheer narcissism, you just need to see this interactive video that you can actually control. You can modify your experience of the soundscape, perspective and get this: if you enable your computer's video camera, you can actually control the multiple 360 video camera feeds by just moving your head! Even if you don't like…
